Views of Hazama 間

Hazama 間 : a space in-between - interval, threshold, interstice; valley, gorge, ravine; loophole, eyelet.

As a child, I was careful not to step on the cracks in the pavement on my way to school. Any child knows these cracks are openings to another world.

At that time, a cat was run over by a bus and all the children of the neighbourhood gathered like moths. The cat’s body was left on the road. It became flatter and flatter until finally light burst through, and the road opened to reveal the rocky, smoking, chasm below.

From that day, I would cling to lamp-posts to prevent myself from being drawn in, and the journey to school became a slow, arduous affair.
